Montenegro on this blog is two regions that lie only about three hours’ drive apart: the Bay of Kotor on the Adriatic coast and the Durmitor mountains in the north. I drove the country from south to north, and the guides here follow that line, from Venetian towns with terracotta roofs to alpine meadows, canyons and bare rocky ridges.

On the coast, my Bay of Kotor guide covers Herceg Novi, Perast and Kotor, the man-made island of Our Lady of the Rocks, lunch overlooking the Verige strait, a boat trip under sail and the quiet Lustica peninsula, with a driving route around the bay and prices.

The road trip from the Bay of Kotor to Durmitor connects the coast and the mountains: Sveti Stefan, the Moraca canyon, the Kolasin 1450 cable car and the Tara bridge, the stops along the way to Zabljak.

In the north, Durmitor and Zabljak is a one-day route through the national park: the Savin Kuk cable car, the Bobotov Kuk hike, the P14 road and the Piva Canyon and Babina Greda viewpoints, with prices and GPS coordinates. Zabljak, the highest town in the Balkans, is the base where you stay. I also wrote a separate article about Sedlo Pass, the mountain road through Durmitor that climbs to 1907 meters and is open from May to October; there are no public buses, so you go by car or scooter.
