The road trip across Bosnia and Herzegovina is a 7-day itinerary that starts at the Serbian border: around 900 kilometres, four overnight bases and seven stops – Mačkovac, Travnik, Jajce, Sarajevo, Mostar, Blagaj and Kravica. Most of them can only be reached by car, so the guide also covers border crossings, roads and distances between the stops.

In central Bosnia I wrote about the Pliva Lakes, five kilometres from Jajce, the former capital of the medieval Bosnian kingdom. Between the Great Lake and the Small Lake, the old wooden Mlinčići watermills stand on the cascades, with the Bridge of Love and lakeside boardwalks right next to them.

In the northeast, about half an hour’s drive from Tuzla, is Mačkovac (Etno avlija Mačkovac), a private open-air museum laid out like one big village yard: old houses, barns, workshops and watermills, around 30,000 exhibits and traditional Bosnian food.
