Vault of Life in Museum of the Future

The Vault of Life struck me as the most intriguing exhibit at the Museum of the Future. It looks truly stunning: in a dark room, rows of semi-circular shelves stretch from floor to ceiling, holding 2,400 crystal jars with samples, each one engraved with an image of a unique existing or even extinct form of life.

You can interact with the vials, and the museum attendants can provide you with a special device that scans the jar and displays all the information about the particular species. It makes you feel like a genuine explorer!

The essence of this installation is rather somber and encourages contemplation of the invaluable diversity of species we have today. It’s the year 2071, and many of the world’s ecosystems have suffered irreversible damage. The Repository illustrates how humanity collectively worked towards the restoration, revival, and renewal of our planetary ecology, presenting an alternative, hopeful future for all species on Earth. In this setting, it’s easy to envision oneself as a passenger on a space station, having left Earth due to a sense of personal responsibility for preserving and sustaining a vibrant and thriving ecology

Walking through this exhibition, we can’t help but feel a profound sense of responsibility. We are not mere spectators but active participants in the ongoing story of life on Earth. It is our duty to ensure that the crystal jars in the Repository continue to represent a diverse and thriving planet for generations to come.

In a time when the challenges of climate change and environmental degradation seem insurmountable, the Repository of Life reminds us that the future is not set in stone. It is a canvas upon which we can paint a different picture—one of restoration, renewal, and coexistence with the myriad of species that call Earth home. It is a call to action, a call to protect and preserve the magnificent tapestry of life that surrounds us.
